Just like any other person in this world I am exposed to any kind of children with special needs with a narrow view like these children cant do anything on their own , they are always dependent on someone or the other. The paradigm of the world is that these children have some mental problem or they are disabled to do anything without another humans assistance. But when we refer ourselves to as “ normal human being “ when we ourselves are disabled to do many works without others help.
I am in the field where I can directly connect to children with down syndrome I have known many facts & myths. It was absurd when I realised that once upon a time, even I thought that they cant do anything on their own. They are even more creative , artistic, smart and they can prove themselves if given the exposure necessary for them rather than letting them down.
In other countries there is some kind of awareness about down syndrome and they do have several support systems. And I feel that in India, comparatively, there is less awareness and also these children are said to be cursed in many rural parts. The cities do have awareness about this condition but there isn’t enough support systems or opportunities for the children to have exposure nor the parents have enough knowledge and wealth to give the opportunities these children deserve.
I take this opportunity to thereby spread awareness amongst the society so that nobody reacts in an unfair way when they hear the word, “DOWN SYNDROME”. They are human beings just like us who are differently abled, and they deserve much more respect, care, and support.
Thus, through these words, I hope that I create an impact within the minds of everyone who reads this would want to change the current scenario where these children are treated with sympathy, cornered, felt sorry for.
So let us all join hands and take the first step towards creating a society with a brand new idea and help these children receive the opportunities that they deserve. Let every citizen realise that the CHANGE that needs to happen in this country is possible when we all look at this condition with a broader perspective, rather than thinking with a narrow mindset.
Let us make every individual with down syndrome independent and not feel sorry for their extra chromosome. Their extra chromosome is indeed a proof that they are extra SPECIAL.
